“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly.

We need millions of people doing it imperfectly” – Anne Marie Bonneau

This International Plastic Bag Free Day at BYJU’S was all about appreciating the Eco Ninjas in our lives. And who is an Eco Ninja, you ask? An Eco Ninja is an individual who leads a sustainable and environmentally responsible life.

To spotlight these incredible individuals amongst us, BYJUites went all out to identify and nominate the Eco Ninjas in their circle. Many interesting and inspiring stories flooded our inbox of eco-friendly initiatives.

The winning stories that inspired us to step up our eco game are:

Eco Ninja G Chandana nominated by Sandhya AP

Change begins at home!

Chandana performing her eco-initiatives

An environmental engineer by profession, Chandana has completely adopted a zero-waste lifestyle. From switching to sustainable personal care products to planning her upcoming zero-waste wedding and partnering with NGOs to generate awareness about environmental issues, she is doing her bit to bring a change.

Eco Ninja Aditya Aggarwal nominated by Aniket A Singh

Act as if there’s no tomorrow

Aditya at his zero-waste wedding

Aditya pulled off a zero-waste, no plastic wedding in the middle of a pandemic. The wedding had e-invites, guests were prompted to come to the venue walking or cycling, and plants were used as return gifts. The family even DIYed the entire decoration using old magazines and plastic waste making the wedding truly “handcrafted”. And the coolest part? The Baraat made an entry on Yulu bikes!

Eco Ninja Tanya Trikha nominated by Varchas Koushik

Every small step counts

BYJUite Tanya showcasing her beautiful upcycled art

Using her creativity, Tanya reduces, reuses and recycles waste while turning it into beautiful art. From reusing old marriage cards and recycling paper at home to reusing old clothes and newspapers to make pen stands, she passionately makes masterpieces out of the discarded. This BYJUite also has a Youtube channel where she provides tips on sustainable living.

Here are some other stories that won our hearts:

Eco Ninja Saiyada Khan nominated by Shama Parveen

An eco-friendly terrace garden

Saiyada believes that no matter the age or stage, you can always make a positive impact on the world. She has built a beautiful terrace garden by upcycling almost all kinds of waste plastic – water bottles, oil cans, plastic bags etc. She passionately reuses whatever she can, including the food waste that she uses to make fertilizer. Her next cool project involves making seats for the garden using old car tyres.

Eco Ninja Dr Saji Varghese nominated by Moksha Muthappa

An individual is enough to bring a revolution

Dr Saji Varghese with his inspiring invention

Dr Saji Varghese was inspired by an incident that took place one day. While out walking, he noticed  birds drinking the water stored in fallen coconut leaves. It gave him the idea of manufacturing straws from fallen coconut leaves, which has now become the world’s first multi-legged biodegradable straws. ‘Sunbird Straw’ is patented by Indian government and is being sold across 11 countries now. Dr. Saji Varghese, who is now the CEO of Blessings Palms Private Limited is a true Eco Ninja whose creativity has made a massive contribution in the fight against plastic waste.

Eco Ninja Lakshmikutty nominated by Aiswarya V

Simple solutions to live a plastic-free life

Eco Ninja Lakshmikutty encouraging youngsters to adopt a sustainable lifestyle

Lakshmikutty sets a true example for the younger generation by following a zero-waste, sustainable lifestyle. From purchasing groceries in reusable bags to making homemade sanitizers and cleaners using neem, turmeric and tulsi during the pandemic, her efforts have truly reduced plastic waste at her home. Her message to the younger generation is to make fresh juice at home instead of buying juice in plastic bottles as it’s healthier and eliminates plastic waste.

Kudos to all the BYJUites for spotlighting these amazing Eco Ninjas! These stories are a great reminder that we can start out small and still make a real difference in the world.
