Hack The Lockdown By Finding The Extraordinary In The Ordinary

Team StoryWeavers|October 14, 2020, 21:51 IST| 10

It’s the 52nd day of lockdown and we know things haven’t been the easiest! It’s the summer holidays and while you have a lot of time on your hands, you can’t go out to play and we’re sure you’re missing all your friends too!

But what if we told you, that you can make this lockdown period 10,000 times more interesting without even leaving your house?

There are a whole bunch of new things you can explore right in your house (pssst, they involve games too) and they’ve been in front of you this whole time!

Here are some ways you can turn the ordinary things in your house into extraordinary adventures.

The Kitchen!

Your kitchen isn’t just for making yummy food! It contains a whole array of chemicals from the citric acid in lemons to the sodium bicarbonate that is disguised as baking soda. Your kitchen is overflowing with chemistry for you to explore!

Home Games!

You can’t go out to play, but you can very well turn your house into a playground! You can use the tiles on your floor to play hopscotch or another fun game called ‘The floor is lava!’ This game involves figuring out a way to move around the house without your feet touching the ground! Doesn’t that sound fun? Oh, and be careful not to break anything around the house while you’re at it.

Animal Calls!

The sounds of birds and animals are now audible throughout the day. This is the perfect chance to become an animal explorer or a birdwatcher and try to identify how many different bird sounds you can spot. Try recording a few bird calls and see if you can identify the names of all the birds!

Pen And Paper Games!

Before video games existed there were a whole bunch of games that you could play with just some paper and a pencil. And do you know who the champions of these games were? Your parents! (Hidden tip: ask them to teach you how to play “Raja, Rani, Thief, Police” or “Name, Place, Animal, Thing”). How about challenging them to a friendly match in these games and see who wins?

This lockdown period is also the perfect time to introspect and learn a little more about yourself.

Here are a few ways you can discover extraordinary things about yourself!

Journaling For A Calm Mind

Start a gratitude journal and write down 5 things that gave you happiness in the day. This will help you focus on the joy in small things and also show you what brings you happiness! If you need more guidance on how to start a journal check out our journaling hobby post here.

Appreciate Your Friends

We all adore our best friends, but how often do we appreciate them? To get started, send your best friend a gratitude e-mail describing all the things you like about them. This will immediately make you feel more positive! Ask your friend to send you a similar e-mail too. Their e-mail may show you some strengths you didn’t know you had!

Wishlist For The Future

This lockdown has shown all of us the things that we really value but maybe didn’t appreciate that much. Whether it’s the bus ride to school of a run in the park, there are small things that we never realised we loved. Make a list of things that you would appreciate more once things go back to normal. This will help you look at your life from a whole new perspective and give you a checklist of all the things you can cross-off once the situation improves.

There are extraordinary things hiding inside the ordinary all around us, even within ourselves. To make your ordinary day extraordinary, all you need to do is look!

Will you try any of these methods? Let us know in the comments!
