When was the last time you disposed of garbage mindfully? Or do you use smartphones minimally by choice? Congratulations! You are a champion for making the Earth a better place to live in.
Steps like these go a long way in preserving the Earth, which has been taking care of all forms of life for billions of years. However, we have depleted a lot of its resources and have left the planet ailing. So all we need to do now is to take care of it.
Infact, every species on Earth has its own way of keeping the planet in the best shape possible. For example, insects and birds take care of important roles like pollination and seed dispersal, beavers detect climate change and elephants help new vegetation grow by leaving gaps in between plants while eating them!
This Earth Day, lets look at what you students can do for the planet. And if you need motivation, look no further than famous student environment activists like Greta Thunberg or our very own Licypriya Kangujam. You can start right away with these small steps, which will create a big impact on the Earths wellbeing.
On a global scale, e-waste has gone up by 20 percent over the past five years and we really need serious measures in place to reduce it. For starters, you can learn how to use electrical appliances effectively so that e-waste is minimised.
If you are looking for a good place to start, you can check out our Junk Art Contest, for which you need to turn an e-waste item into a reusable art piece. For example, how about making a pen stand out of old wires?
Last date for submitting a picture of your artwork is May 2, so hurry up and put on your green warrior hats!
Here are some other ideas! You can approach companies that repair used devices and make them as good as new, and then offer these to lesser privileged people. That way, you are not just recycling e-waste but also helping others. Other companies also segregate the raw materials like plastic and glass and recycle them indivi2021nznxxdually too.
Once the global pandemic situation is under control and we are free to move around outside, you can make the best use of your time by teaming up with your friends and taking nature walks to clean up dirty surroundings. But, for now, you can stick to your own garden at home and plant a few saplings. Even though this seems like a small chore, trust us; if many of you do it together, the impact will be huge.
Be it fuel, electricity or any resource for that matter, our increased usage puts our planet at risk. It increases the emission of greenhouse gases and also causes climate change. You can solve this problem in your own way. Go green for a few hours everyday! Refrain from using your smartphones or television or the internet for set periods of time. Reduced consumption can create a significant impact on the wellbeing of the planet.
How many times would we have left the lights on or the water running? Needless to say, this leads to resource depletion too.
Being mindful of consuming resources even in your homes can make a big difference! To further help your family, you can make handwritten notes and stick them near switches or taps as daily reminders to switch them off after every use.
