This is not just any Sunday! It’s the second Sunday of May. Which means it’s Mother’s Day! To celebrate, we’re doing a special edition of the Sunday Challenge. The questions (or answers) in this challenge are in some way or the other, related to mothers!

Question 1

Her daughter received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for discovering that radioactive atoms could be created artificially. She herself won the Nobel Prize twice – the first was Physics in 1903 and the second was for Chemistry eight years later. This makes them the only mother-daughter Nobel laureate duo. Identify both of them.

Created as a by-product of chemical processes like sugar refining, this substance is the solution remaining after a component has been removed by crystallization. What is it called?

Some molluscs like oysters produce a strong, colourful and iridescent layer on the inside of their shells. Called ‘nacre’, it’s the same material that pearls are also made of. What appropriate three-word name is nacre also known by?

Pictured below is the garter snake. There’s something different about garter snake mothers when compared to other snakes. What sets them apart?
