preparing kids for the jobs of tomorrow

Anxiety issues can give you sleepless nights and it can be due to a number of factors. Some people are anxious about their next presentation, the speech they need to deliver next Monday, on stage, in front of a big audience at school or even about getting their finances right.

The most important thing for any parent is the future of their child. Nothing in the world could be more important than that to them. They work every single day to ensure that their children could have the most secure future ahead of them.

After the health and wellbeing of a child, education ranks among the list of top priorities for parents. Providing the best possible education for their kids is a dream for most parents. They know all too well that education can make or break the future of their little ones.

Will the jobs of today be available tomorrow?

The risks associated with a changing job environment existed ever since the beginning of civilisation, but those risks were negligible back then. The post-industrial revolution era has seen a very rapid change in the job markets, with requirements changing just as frequently.

Some of the notable changes took place due to the rise of technology and more importantly, due to developments in the field of communication, computer technology, artificial intelligence and other processes of automation.

Many fields have become obsolete and redundant over the years. For example, in the past, we had switchboard operators, telegraph operators, video store owners etc. Today these job roles have been rendered obsolete.

Some of the jobs that are at most risk today lie in the automotive and petroleum industry. Both industries have been impacted by changes in environmental law, technology and the economics of transportation. Going green with the use of Electric Vehicles will have a heavy impact on these industries. Plus, automation in the fields of manufacturing and services will take away a lot of job roles in the future.

All this is bound to get any parent worried, no doubt!

How to future proof the career of your child?

Surely this question must have crossed the minds of most parents. Surprisingly, no answer would be perfect without accounting for adapting to changing times.

“Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

– John F Kennedy

Former US President John F. Kennedy has left us a valuable statement that just might hold the answer to the question, “How to future proof the career of your child?”.

Think about the different career paths that are available today and that were available a few decades back. Thankfully most of these careers do exist even to this day. For example, mechanical engineers, draftsmen, surveyors, accountants, marketing agents, doctors, scientists, teachers, artists and the list goes on.

But there is a big difference in the way that they execute their jobs today, as opposed to what was being done many years ago. This change is more related to the use of technology rather than the end result.

For example, mechanical engineers use a number of software programs for design and testing before execution. Accountants use accounting software and many other tools along with it. Doctors and marketers too have increased the use of technology in their professional lives.

So keeping your child updated with current technology and developments is one way to ensure security. The other is by keeping their options open. Building flexibility very early on can help children adapt easily to change as they grow. They can switch between career paths easily and adjust to any scenario that pops up.

Here are some generic skills that can help in ensuring job security in the future:

  • Keeping up to date with current developments in the economy and the job markets.
  • Always investing in your child to help them develop additional skill sets.
  • Mastering soft skills that find value in multiple fields of work can ensure versatility.
  • Going forward with learning new technologies and tools that are relevant to your field.
  • Keeping all doors open as far as career switches are concerned.

What are some evergreen job skills that kids can acquire very early on?

  • Communication

Verbal and written communication skills can make or break any career. Great listening skills are also a part of communication. Good communication skills will improve efficiency, productivity and do away with general misunderstandings in a workplace.

  • Teamwork

Most professional settings require you to work in a team environment rather than going solo. Hence being a team player is a skill that is indispensable no matter what line of profession you are in.

  • Negotiation and persuasion

Negotiation skills are generally acquired through years of experience in the field of sales and marketing but it is not necessarily confined to those fields. Children who socialise tend to develop them very early on. People who are diplomatic are naturally great at negotiating and persuading people.

  • Problem-solving

Companies love employees who take a logical and analytical approach to solve problems. The ability to think diversely and come up with more than one solution to a given problem is a clear advantage.

  • Leadership

You may not be hired right away to a managerial position. It takes some experience to earn the seat at the high table but showing potential leadership skills tends to attract employers. If you love organising events or have led a team in just about anything it is a sign that you have been cut from the cloth of leadership!

  • Organisation

Organisational skills involve prioritising work and doing it efficiently and productively. Time management is a part of your organisational skill set.

  • Self-motivation

Not quitting easily and having the willpower to pursue a target is a great skill to have. Being self-driven and persistent is a very important trait that most employers look for irrespective of the job type.

  • Confidence

An ample amount of confidence is greatly admired by any employer. Even if you don’t know something but you have the confidence that you could pick it up along the way, then that is assurance in itself for any employer.

The Covid-19 pandemic has further transformed the way we work, travel, socialise and do businesses. This crisis has been an eye-opener to those who pay attention. Over the past couple of months, ever since the beginning of the pandemic, people have started re-skilling themselves.

Most of the skills they developed, as a result, have been related to the use of technology to bridge the distance of daily interactions in a post-pandemic world. Although getting through this patchy period in human history has been challenging, it has given way to a number of new job possibilities. Many traditional jobs will continue to exist but with one MAJOR DIFFERENCE! Execution has gone remote! Adapting to changing times is the way forward!
